On March 30, our own Natalia Napoleon de Bens was asked to speak at Start Up City Miami, an amazing conference put together by The Atlantic Live. The focus of the conference was the fostering and development of start up culture in Miami and we were thrilled to be asked to join!
Natalia spoke on "Recruiting the Dream Team" and was joined by Leandro Finol, Executive Director of the The Idea Center at Miami-Dade College; Rebecca Fishman Lipsey, CEO of Radical Partners; and Jim McKelvey, Co-Founder of Square and LaunchCode. You may have heard of him, he's besties with the President!
The conversation focused on creating a team in the context of a start up. Natalia spoke about the difficulties of maintaining yourself and your identity while trying to make the hard sale. "Selling requires maintaining the qualities that attract people to you while still trying to move that product." The panel also addressed attracting people to your team, and Natalia said that "the people you bring on board need to have the same work ethics and the same drive." Rebecca Fishman Lipsey may have had our favorite motto of the day when she declared that her start up resolution was "no assholes!"
Natalia also addressed the dearth of women in the start up space. She noted the lack of representation for women in the tech community but proudly declared that her company, Lemon City Tea Co., was founded by 4 women. Hell yeah it was!
The conference was incredibly fulfilling for us. We met great people, we discussed issues relevant to our start up life, and even got to hear Mr. Tom Colicchio talk about his own successes!
