Our Porteños blend was inspired by its namesake: the Porteños of Buenos Aires and their mates. Maté is a tea native to South America and is incredibly popular in Argentina, Uruguay, and Chile. You may have spied some of those boludos sipping their mates from their gourds around town. However, maté is...an acquired taste. To bring maté to the masses, we developed a complex, bright blend that brings just the right amount of bite.
We tried to imagine an Argentine on vacation. What would this loyal maté drinker want to be sipping while soaking up the sun? Thus, our Porteños was born.
We combined yerba maté, jasmine green tea, green rooibos tea, hibiscus, tulsi, and schizandra berries to create the signature flavor. The hibiscus is the first thing you smell when you bring the tea up to your nose, that sweet, floral note that makes you inevitably think of summer. The maté is the base, and you can taste the slight bitterness of the maté in every sip. The green tea and the rooibos smooths out the mate and the jasmine adds a layer of aroma. And the schizandra berry? It's a fascinating plant, used to reverse the aging process and even as an aphrodisiac! It's Chinese name is wu-wei-zi, which means "five taste fruit." The berries have sour, sweet, warm, bitter, and salty elements, making them a perfect addition to our summery blend.
The slight bitterness of the maté is also a fantastic base for a cocktail. The tea easily replicates the flavor profile of brandy and other spirits, making it a great ingredient for a sangria or a punch. One of our favorites is the Rose all day - incredibly easy to make and a refreshing warm-weather cocktail! As the tea brews a beautiful pink color, the cocktail is also pretty to look at.
